STAFF BIOS
Jenny Hansell , Executive Director of the North East Community Center, has 20 years experience in non-profit management. She began her career as a development assistant, and then Environmental Policy Analyst, at the National Audubon Society and served at the Council on the Environment of New York City as Assistant Director, where she worked on the Greenmarket program, open space protection and waste reduction.
She spent five years as a freelance fundraising consultant to nonprofit organizations in and around NYC. Some of her grantwriting clients included The Lawyer’s Committee for Human Rights, The Flatbush Haitian Center, the Flamenco Vivo Spanish Dance Company, and a startup New Visions school in Washington Heights.
While freelancing as a grantwriter, she also worked at Creative Arts Workshops for Kids, with homeless and formerly homeless children. While there, she organized projects in the visual and performing arts for children ages 5 –18; created and led an after-school tutoring program for middle-school students, a sexuality education program for high-school students, and served as development director as well, overseeing the group’s growth from an all-volunteer startup to a $500,000-a-year organization with a staff of 9. Upon the departure of the organization’s founders she became Executive Director and spearheaded a capital campaign to renovate new office space.
Her experience extends to the for-profit world as well: Ms. Hansell was involved in two Internet projects, an offshoot of America Online that involved young adults in volunteering, and iSTASH.com, a financial education site where Ms. Hansell wrote and edited articles on philanthropy for young people. She contributes dance and film reviews to the Millerton News’ Compass section, and is a frequent contributor to Sesame Street’s online parenting newsletter.
A graduate of Yale University, Ms. Hansell has studied nonprofit management, education and social work at the New School University, Columbia University, Bank Street College of Education and Hunter School of Social Work. She serves on the board of the Light Opera Company of Salisbury (past president). She lives in Sharon, CT with her husband, Fred Baumgarten, who is Assistant Director of Program Development at Bard College, and two daughters, Abbey, 9, and Ella, 5.
