Growing, Learning, and Thriving:
Family Support Program at NECC Reaches Out to Parents and Children
Growing Together, Mom’s Morning Out and Music for Preschoolers — NECC’s family
support programs focus on different
aspects of family life, but they
have the common goal of making
the early parenting years less stressful
and lonely, and more enjoyable
and fulfilling. These very active programs
are serving more mothers,
fathers, infants, and preschool children
than ever before.
About 12 parents and their children
currently attend Growing Together, a weekly play group/support
group. During the first half of
the two-hour session, the children
play and socialize under the supervision
of their parents and NECC’s
childcare team, led by
John Mahoney, an
experienced preschool
educator. The
children play outdoors
and participate
in arts and crafts, storytelling,
or singing.
During the second hour, the
children remain happily
with the staff while parents
join Lauren Astor, a family
counselor, in a spirited talk
session.
The focus of the GrowingTogether support group is on
parents finding ways to
reduce tension, worry, guilt, and
other common negatives.“‘Taking care of yourself’” may
sound selfish, said Lauren, “but it
really isn’t. If you feel good about
yourself and your parenting skills,
then your contentment is going to be
passed along to the rest of the family.
You’ll have more patience with
your children and your partner —
and everyone’s stress will go
down.”
Our Family Arts Festival features some returning favorites - the David Grover Big Bear Band, Mark Alexander's Mortal Beasts and Dieties, and Li'l Anne and Hot Cayenne! and some new acts you won't want to miss! (read more!)

What kind of community do we want to live in? What is the role of our community center in bringing that vision to life?
In the fall of 2006, the Board and Staff of the North East Community Center (NECC) set out to take a fresh look at these questions. We interviewed leaders from our schools, service providers, community and business groups and local government. We listened to seniors, school children and adolescents. We talked to parents, doctors, fire fighters, and business people. We scoured statistics and studies that revealed the changes and needs taking place...
After-School ProgramProvides Enrichment, Learning and Fun

Our after-school program is for students in grades K-6, and runs daily til 6pm. The creative and enriching activities included everything from belly dancing, modeling, visits from "literacy dog" to sports, chess, field trips and much more. This year, with two rooms all to ourselves, the possibilities are endless.
