NECC's Community Partnership with Schools and Business…

  • Gives teenagers the opportunity to explore goals, dreams, and future careers — and get good, paying jobs right now.
  • Provides businesses with young workers who are already trained in fundamental job skills and supported by adult advisors.
  • Helps the community prepare young people for meaningful and productive lives after high school.

CPSB is an internship and work skills training program for students ages 14 through 19. Locally, the program is a partnership among the North East Community Center, the Webutuck School District, and area businesses. Since 2003, CPSB has placed more than 300 students in internships with local employers.

 

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS: Join CPSB and…

  • learn how to get a job — locate good opportunities, write resumes and cover letters, apply and interview.
  • and keep it — learn all the skills needed to succeed in the workplace, from dress and etiquette to conflict resolution.
  • research future careers and the educational requirements of these careers.
  • get an entry-level job in a field of your choice. Forget flipping burgers and babysitting. Through CPSB, you can get the kind of job that leads to a real career. The pay is minimum wage, but the experience is worth its weight in gold. You can work up to 10 hours per week during the school year (if you keep your grades up) and 30 hours per week in the summer.

BENEFITS TO EMPLOYERS: As a CPSB partner, you'll make an important contribution to the local economy by helping to train the future workforce. You'll also benefit from the work performed by a teen, at no cost (wages are paid by CPSB). In return for the free labor, you will…

  • Offer meaningful work — so that your intern can learn what it's really like to work in your field.
  • Assign a mentor to your intern — mentors teach interns workplace rules and regulations and the specific tasks required of the job. They also help them establish good working relationships with co-workers and resolve problems in positive ways. The mentoring relationship builds the intern's confidence and pride in doing a job to the best of his or her abilities.
CPSB HISTORY CPSB was created by the Eleanor Roosevelt Val- Kill Center (ERVK) in 2001 to provide jobs and jobs skills training for Dutchess County teenagers. The program also aims to improve academic achievement and broaden career opportunities for our youth. Five school districts — Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Dover, Pawling, and Webutuck — have participated so far, and more than 400 students countywide have completed paid internships through the program.

 

The Webutuck school district joined the partnership in 2003, and CPSB is now well-established in the Millerton–Amenia, NY area. The local program is coordinated by the North East Community Center (NECC) in Millerton, and many area businesses have participated as hosts (see reverse).
