MILLERTON — The North East Community Center (NECC) hosted a Day of Dance on Saturday, June 9, featuring Naomi Goldberg Haas of Dance for a Variable Population.
The day began with a free workshop for adults of all ages followed by a master class and a free performance in the evening.
NECC Executive Director Jenny Hansell put the event together after taking classes with Haas.
“I had been to their workshops and taken classes with Naomi. We applied for a grant from the Dutchess County Art Council to have them come and do a workshop here. Everyone is having so much fun,” she said.
Haas has a very clear message in regards to her programs.
“We’re interested in both encouraging dance practices and linking communities in movement,” she said.
Hansell was happy to see such a positive reception to the event.
“It’s not common for people to feel free to move in a safe space. I think that’s part of the reason everyone is enjoying it. It’s safe here and it’s encouraging people to let themselves move freely,” she said.
The evening performance was a way for Dance for a Variable Population to introduce themselves to the community.
“It’s really an introduction to who we are as a company. It’s a wonderful performance,” said Haas.
Hansell is looking forward to working with the company more in the future.
“It’s just been such a great turnout and great reception. This is a fun and informative event,” she said.
