AMENIA — The North East Community Center (NECC), sponsor of the Millerton Farmers Market, is opening a second market in Amenia, set to debut on Tuesday, July 3.

Funded by a Fresh Connect grant from New York state, Share the Bounty Farmers Market will offer some of the region’s best locally grown vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy products and breads. Share the Bounty Farmers Market will operate on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the grounds of Hudson River HealthCare (HRHC), located at 3360 Route 343, Amenia, near the center of town. The market will be open to the public and is especially convenient for the clinic’s patients.

“This market really is a collaborative effort with so many members of our community,” Betsey McCall asid. “Hudson River HealthCare is hosting the market and one of their nutritionists will be leading a monthly cooking demonstration. Somos la Llave del Futuro, a not-for-profit group working to build leadership in the immigrant communities, is doing outreach for the market.”

NECC chose Tuesdays as the market day because those are the days when twice a month HRHC offers WIC days when mothers and their infants and children can come to the health-care center for checkups, vouchers, nutrition counseling and education. The Share the Bounty Farmers Market will accept EBT/Food Stamps, Senior and WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks, Health Bucks, which are $2 savings coupons, and Fresh Connect checks, another $2 coupon — making the market’s healthy food affordable for everyone.

A nutrition educator from HRHC will demonstrate techniques for preparing market produce and give away great recipes and cookbooks.

Local and regional vendors participating in the Tuesday market include:

•Amenia Community Garden (Amenia) — vegetables.

•Berkshire Mountain Bakery (Housatonic, Mass.) — artisanal sourdough bread.

•Dashing Star Farm (Millerton) — lamb, eggs, wool pillows, sheepskins.

•Farmscapes (Millerton) — vegetables and sweet corn.

•Higher Ground Farm (Red Hook) — vegetables, berries, eggs, maple syrup, honey.

•Wassaic Community Farm (Wassaic) — vegetables, herbs, herbal teas.

•Willow Brook Farms (Millerton) — Hudson Valley Fresh milk, half & half, heavy cream, sour cream.

“The opportunity to have Share the Bounty Farmers Market on our grounds is one that we welcome with open arms for the benefit of our patients,” said Susan Koppenhaver, practice manager at Hudson River HealthCare. “We are delighted to have a farmers market with fresh, healthy seasonal food and recipes on our health center grounds, and hope that our example leads to others following our lead.”
