The event is called the Big Barn Dance and BBQ and will run from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a silent auction and raffle as well as square dancing from 5 to 6 p.m. to sounds of local band Mountain Laurel.
"Mr. Roc," as he is known to generations of students at Webutuck, has been the technology teacher in the middle school for many years. The community center pointed out projects like "Christmas in April" or building desks for pre-schoolers as exemplary acts of a someone looking out for the good of the community.
"John is such an obvious choice," said Jenny Hansell, NECC's executive director. "There's a tremendous amount of service he's not only done himself, but inspired others to do."
Hansell added that it was a mutual relationship between the NECC and Roccanova.
"If we have an idea that we want to do involving students at the school, he's the go-to person. And he's always come to us for anything, like taking students on trips to visit colleges. He has lots of ideas that he's always coming up with."
This is the second year that the North East Community Center is giving out a Community Service Award. Last year the drivers in the Care Car program collectively were honored.
"It seemed like such a nice tradition," Hansell said. "This is the second year of what we hope will be many."
Tickets are $40, or $25 for seniors. An anonymous donor has agreed to pay the ticket price for any of Roccanova's students who wish to attend, but they must contact Hansell prior to the event. The North East Community Center can be reached at 518-789-4259.
